New Delhi: It was a wet winter night, more than three years ago, when Sunanda Pushkar died under mysterious circumstances at a 5-star hotel in New Delhi. Since January 17, 2014, the day Shashi Tharoor's wife died, there hasn't been a definitive word on how Sunanda died.
An autopsy was conducted under the AIIMS medical board. The viscera was sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) labs, and a wider medical board was also constituted. But the cloud over her death continues until today.
But now it’s time that the world would finally get to know the truth. In about a fortnight's time, the wider medical board will hold a crucial meeting to ascertain the cause of her death.
When the AIIMS report was inconclusive on the cause of the death, Sunanda's son Shiv Menon wrote to the then Delhi Police chief BS Bassi, saying if AIIMS couldn't confirm the cause of his mother's death, why can't other doctors be consulted? That's when the wider medical board was constituted.
While the AIIMS doctors so far have hinted that Sunanda died of Alprazolam overdose, the wider medical board refrained from giving their opinion for the want of more data. In its last meeting, the board had said that it needed more clarity and some data from the FBI labs to conclusively comment on the cause of death.
After that, a DCP-led team of Delhi Police went to FBI labs once again and returned with more analytical data. In the impending meeting with the wider medical board, the Special Investigation Team constituted to unravel this death mystery, will put forth this data in front of the board.
Once the cause of death is ascertained, the probe will hedge on whether it was a murder or suicide or accidental death. And that is when the SIT would look into Shashi Tharoor's role in it. So far Tharoor and his aides have been questioned a number of times; some of his associates were made to undergo a lie detector test as well.
A PIL by Subramanian Swami is pending in the Delhi High Court, where he has sought a CBI probe into the death of Sunanda Pushkar. Earlier, he had asked the Home Ministry to hand over the case to CBI, but MHA had then replied to him saying that the Delhi police SIT is at an advanced stage of investigation and if the case is transferred to CBI at this stage, it would only lead to further delay.
