New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders from across the political spectrum on Wednesday condoled the demise of former governor PC Alexander hailing him as an 'outstanding' civil servant and administrator.
"Alexander was one of our most outstanding civil servants. To each of the numerous public positions he held, he brought not only his fierce commitment to the public good but also a quiet grace and dignity," Singh said in a message.
"It was a tribute to his extraordinary abilities that his advice was sought by successive Prime Minister," he said recalling the contribution of 90-year-old Alexander who breathed his last in Chennai.
Singh said it was indeed rare to come across a public servant with the qualities of the head and heart that Alexander possessed. "I offer my condolences to the family members and friends of Alexander in this hour of grief."
Alexander was the principal secretary to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and briefly advised Rajiv Gandhi.
Expressing his condolence to the bereaved family, BJP chief Nitin Gandakri said Alexander will always be remembered as an an 'able administrator' by the people of Maharashtra, where he served as the Governor from 1993 to 2002.
"I express my profound grief and sorrow on the demise of PC Alexander, a veteran bureaucrat and a former governor of Maharashtra," he said.
In her message, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said the nation had lost one of its excellent administrators.
She said Alexander had excelled himself as the Principal Secretary to late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Indian envoy to United Kingdom, besides the governor of Tamil Nadu (1988-1990) and Maharashtra.
He served as Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1988 to 1990.
