Police says Big B security not trimmed
Coolies took out a procession to protest against Maharashtra govt's decision to scale down the security cover of Big B.

New Delhi: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan played the role of a coolie in the famous film, Coolie but on Monday it was the turn of coolies in Kanpur to show their solidarity towards Bachchan.

Dozens of coolies took out a silent procession in Kanpur to protest against the Maharashtra government's decision to scale down the security cover of Bachchan.

The coolies have also threatened to strike work if the security of Bachchan is not restored to the original form.

However, according to Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Poice, Arup Patnaik there has been no change in security categorisation of Bachchan.

"Amitabh’s security category remains the same but the number of policemen deployed in his security reduces," Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said.

Meanwhile, in Allahabad, too, dozens of Samajwadi Party activists took to streets.

The activists also burnt an effigy of Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi.

Bachchan is a member of the Uttar Pradesh Development Council and though not directly involved in politics, has campaigned several times for the party in the past.

Bachchan's wife and film actor Jaya Bachchan is a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh representing the Samajwadi Party.

Protestors alleged the reduction in Bachchan’s security was part of a conspiracy hatched by the Congress party.

"We are protesting against the reduction of security cover to Amitabh Bachchan that has been taken away by the Maharashtra government at the instance of the Congress-ruled Centre. He is the pride of Allahabad and in fact of the whole country. His security has been decreased as part of a conspiracy. The Congress party government should resign and the Maharashtra government should be dismissed," District President, Samajwadi Party, Ravindra Yadav said.

Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sriprakash Jaiswal however, dismissed allegations that the Centre was in any way involved in deciding the Big B's security cover.

He said it was entirely for the state government to decide whether to increase or decrease anybody's security cover.

"We don't have any information on whose security has been increased or reduced. The security given to any individual by the state government is monitored by them only. We have nothing to do with it. If we get a complaint on this, we will see," Jaiswal said.
