Proposal to raise retirement age of AIIMS faculty put on hold
AIIMS will have a new Governing Body with the previous body's tenure having ended this month.

New Delhi: Decision on a proposal to increase the retirement age of AIIMS director and teaching faculty from 65 to 70 years has been deferred for a second time following opposition from several quarters.

The proposal was discussed at the Governing Body meeting held recently. "It was turned down following opposition by some members present in the meeting... Questions were also raised about the proposal being put up at the meeting of an outgoing Governing Body," said a senior doctor at AIIMS.

A decision on the proposal had been deferred at the institute body meeting held on May 12 last year, which was chaired by then Union Health Minister and AIIMS president Ghulam Nabi Azad.

"The age of superannuation of teaching faculty needs to be enhanced from the present 65 years to 70 years on the pattern of other higher educational institutions like IITs, so that the services of talented and experienced senior faculty members could be retained...," said the doctor, quoting the meeting agenda.

Also, the decision on the selection of 147 assistant professors was deferred citing some irregularities in preparation of reservation rosters for SC, ST and OBC.

"Decision on the selection of 147 assistant professors was deferred by members at the meeting citing some irregularities in preparation of reservation rosters for SC, ST and OBC for faculty posts. Now, Department of Personnel & Training's (DoPT) opinion has been sought on this issue," said another doctor.

According to AIIMS sources, no proposal was approved at the recent Governing Body meeting. AIIMS will have a new Governing Body with the previous body's tenure having ended this month.
