Investigation into the Pune car accident that killed two software engineers around 2.30 am on Sunday in the Kalyani Nagar area is revealing shocking details. Fresh reports suggest that the Porsche Taycan driven by the 17-year-old had been operating on the streets of the city without registration since March.
According to a report in the Times of India (TOI), the owner had purchased the electric luxury sports sedan, ranging between Rs 1.61 crore and Rs 2.44 crore in India, but didn’t pay the registration fees to the regional transport office (RTO).
“The car was booked through a dealer in Bengaluru, which provided a temporary registration before delivering it to the owner in March this year. It was the responsibility of the owner to get it registered. The vehicle came to Pune RTO and an inspection was done. However, the owner didn’t pay the fee required for the registration. Since the fee was not paid, we couldn’t provide a registration number,” Pune regional transport officer Sanjiv Bhor was quoted as saying by TOI.

Pune Police has arrested the father of the teen, who was on the run after a case was registered against him. An officer said that he was held in Maharashtra’s Sambhajinagar.
Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, “Police have taken the incident seriously, and have taken action under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). We moved two applications in this case. We also took action under sections 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) and 77 (penalty for giving intoxicating liquor or narcotic drug or psychotropic substance to a child) of Juvenile Justice Act against the father of the accused.”
The Juvenile Justice Board’s decision to grant the youngster bail on the same day while asking him to write an essay on road accidents has drawn criticism.
The youngster, son of a real estate developer, was drunk at the time of the accident, police claimed on Monday. A case has been registered against him under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder ) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
A group of friends were returning on motorbikes around 3.15 am on Sunday after a party when a speeding luxury car hit one of the motorcycles at Kalyani Nagar junction. The two riders — Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa — died of their injuries.
