Punjab to check female foeticide
To check the rampant rise of female foeticide, Punjab will take Shabana Azmi’a help to create awareness on the issue.

Chandigarh: Punjab, which is struggling to check the rampant female foeticide, is now taking the help of noted actress and social activist Shaban Azmi to create awareness on the issue among its masses.

"The issue of female foeticide is one of concern for us. Now, we have invited Shabana Azmi and Patiala MP Preneet Kaur to educate the masses on foeticide," state Finance Minister Surinder Singla told reporters here on Tuesday.

As the state faced an adverse sex ratio, he said the government had set up an Advisory Commitee aimed at arresting the problem of female foeticide and Azmi was a member of the Committee.

"We believe the problem will linger on as long as the mindset of the people (towards girl child) does not change. Policies and legislations alone can't tackle this issue," he said.

To a question, he informed that the report of the inquiry into the incident where many female foetuses were recovered from the septic tank of a nursing home in Patiala district was awaited.
