Civic amenities in Pattamundai town and nearby areas have gone for a toss ever since the rains began. The condition of roads has turned from bad to worse after the incessant rains this week. This is being attributed to poor quality of road construction by the Roads and Buildings (R&D) Department and Notified Area Council (NAC) authorities.
Many roads that were laid and repaired recently have developed potholes and cracks following the rains. To make things worse for commuters in the night, there are no streetlights.
Water-logging has been witnessed in Pokhariapada, Baktarpur, Matia, Praharajpur, Chauni, Alava, Arada and Chapada areas within the NAC limits.
Locals alleged that although every year new roads are laid in different areas of the NAC, they are damaged in rains. “The NAC authorities lack vision and foresight. The plan and estimate of the road project are also lopsided. Roads should have proper drainage systems so that there is no water-logging. Here, a drizzle is enough to make roads waterlogged,” said Prashant Sahoo of Pokhariapada area. Kashinath Behera, a social activist, alleged that in the name of repair and relaying, government grants are wasted. “There has been little change in the condition of the roads here despite a lot of money being spent on road repair and maintenance,” he said. NAC Chairman Hemanta Kumar Sahoo said road repairs are being carried out with the help of R&D Department. “Encroachments along roads have been the biggest stumbling block in carrying out repairs in right earnest,” he said.
