Mumbai: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday told the Maharashtra government that it doesn't have any problem if Rakesh Maria continues to be the Mumbai Police Commissioner during the general elections.
This after a January 9, 2014 circular issued by the EC specified that government officials related to the election process, revenue department and police cannot be appointed in their hometowns.
Rakesh Maria, a 1981 batch IPS officer, was brought up in Bandra and has given his hometown as Mumbai.
The EC had expressed that his appointment as CP was in contravention of the circular, and had orally sought clarifications from the State government on how Maria's appointment is beneficial to Mumbai and its policing.
The Maharashtra government had then written a letter to the EC saying that there are deputy commissioners, additional commissioners and joint commissioners of police for poll security and that Maria is just a supervisory officer and does not have a direct role in the elections.
