A resolution moved in the Corporation Council by Chackai councillor S Santhini opposed the Government move to share the school’s plot with the Baby John Foundation. The school, which dates back to pre-Independence times, is the resort for many students living in the nearby slums. The school has an anganwadi functioning alongside it. According to the councillor, many well-known personalities were students of this school and have been putting their bit to save it from the dilapidated situation it had fallen into.‘’The local people have been engaged in turning the school into a better condition. To an extent, it has been fruitful, if we go by the student numbers this time,’’ said Santhini, LDF councillor.According to her, the Revenue Department is moving ahead with plans to allot 20 cents of the school land to the Baby John Foundation which could destroy the school’s prospects to develop. ‘’Majority of the students here belong to SC/STcategory. The Corporation has been providing noon meal and breakfast to the children. The move to usurp the land of a school for non-school activities cannot be justified,’’ the resolution said. The Council also passed the resolution moved by Thampanoor councillor R Harikumar which said that the three buildings situated on the SMV High School premises which have been listed as protected monuments be brought down for fear of crumbling down anytime. Parts of one building’s pillar had come down the other day, injuring the left leg of a student. ‘’The buildings have to brought down and new buildings put up. You cannot run the risk of letting children sit under the old buildings just because they are protected. This is not the way to protect the buildings,’’ Harikumar said. The resolution also asked the State Government to provide financial assistance to the student who was injured. first published:August 17, 2012, 11:27 ISTlast updated:August 17, 2012, 11:27 IST
