Chennai: Enchanting Tamil Nadu is set to get more charming, with two parks on the lines of the popular Sentosa in Singapore planned for Chennai and Tiruchy, each at a cost of Rs 50 crore, among a host of other measures proposed by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday, as she earmarked Rs 550 crore for the state’s tourism sector.

Apart from the parks, a seven-point charter that the Chief Minister has evolved to improve tourism includes package tours in rural areas, integrated infrastructure improvement of tourist circuits, better roadside facilities for tourists, helicopter tourism, luxury ship tourism and rope car tourism, an official release here said.

For rural tour packages, five to seven villages noted for their handicrafts and traditional arts would be chosen and developed with faci­lities meant to draw visitors.

Besides, several areas will be promoted as tourist spots. Sivaganga’s Karaikkudi, Pillaiyarpatti, Kanadukathan and Athangadi which are rich in Chettinad culture; Kumbakonam, Swamimalai, Tharasuram, Patteeswaram and Nachiyarkoil in Thanjavur district; Kallidaikurichi, Ambasamudram, Papanasam and Mundanthurai in Tirunelveli district; Suseendram, Thirparappu, Thiruvattar, Udayagiri and Thengaipattinam in Kanyakumari district; Azhagarkoil, Pazhamudirsolai, Melur and Narasingampatti areas in Madurai district; Pollachi, Anaimalai and Azhiyar areas in Coimbatore district and Kolli Hills in Namakkal district have been shortlisted.

Also, infrastructure will be improved in the East Coast Tourist Circuit, including Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts, and South Tourist Circuit — Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts with aid from Asian Development Bank. The improvement works will be carried out in the next 10 years at a cost of Rs 450 crore.
