Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Legislative Assembly witnessed ugly scenes on Wednesday as opposition MLAs created a ruckus over the Sabarimala issue.
Lawmakers of the BJP and the UDF disrupted the Question Hour and demanded the removal of restrictions imposed by the Pinarayi Vijayan government at the hill shrine.
As soon as the Speaker, P Sreeramakrishnan, called the chief minister to reply to the first question listed for the day, UDF legislators rushed to the well and started shouting slogans and displaying placards. The opposition members also entered the well of the House and tried to enter the Speaker’s podium.
Despite the commotion, Vijayan informed the Assembly that the government is not in any hurry to approach the Supreme Court, citing the problems regarding implementation of the its landmark verdict allowing entry of women of all age groups into Sabarimala.
“A decision in this regard shall be taken only after examining the High Court verdict that came the other day,” he said. The HC had scrapped every restriction imposed by the administration, except those necessary to maintain law and order. The order would mean that the prohibitory order too shall lose steam.
The government also won’t oppose the three-member panel constituted by the high court to evaluate the situation at Sabarimala, the chief minister said.
Adding drama to the proceedings were BJP MLA O Rajagopal and Poonjar MLA PC George (formerly with Kerala Congress (M)), who came wearing black, in a bid to mark protest over the Sabarimala row.
George said he had come in support of the believers and the robes were to convey a strong word of dissent towards the “anti-religious” policies of the government led by Pinarayi Vijayan.
