KOCHI: It is named, “Night of the DAMned”. The ‘Evergreen’ rock band wants to wake up the youth of the city on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue, with their song, ‘Run to the Light’. “We are in danger, so we must do something urgently before it's too late,” says Jagan George, vocalist.Interestingly, everybody has to wear white, to symbolise death that is hovering over us. Since the band’s name, ‘Evergreen’, is associated with nature, it enables them to raise their voices over the Mullaperiyar issue.“We believe in imparting ‘positive energy’ music,” says Jagan. The band had shown their social commitment earlier: with their ‘Riot for Water’, a song about the Plachimada cause. This was against Coca Cola draining the groundwater in Plachimada. With their music, they charm the music lovers all around.‘Evergreen’ wants the youth of Kerala to join hands with them. Says Sudheesh, an engineering student, from Thiruvananthapuram: “My exams got over on November 27, and on the same night we were discussing the Mullaperiyar issue. We were pulling each other’s legs by saying that we would find our relatives and friends floating at the Shanghumukham beach. It was all a jovial anxiousness that we were having. But now the awareness programmes all over has awakened us. So we have decided to be a part of the concert in Kochi, and pass on the message to the youngsters.”This five-piece band was set up in 2005. By 2007, they came up with their debut album, ‘Between and Beyond’, which tells people to look at life between and beyond the real sense. The band was selected for the Sound City Festival 2010 and have been performing all around Middle East last year. They are the only band from South India to be a part of MTV Taking Pole Position-Open for Metallica Contest 2011.The band has Jagan George as its vocalist, Sunil Silvester on strings, Arun Roop on drums, while Sam plays the keys and Arun M S is the bass guitarist. They have a sixth member, Aju Thomas, who pens down the lyrics, and does the editing and photography. The skills of Aju’s photography can be made out from the band’s tees. They perform in pubs, clubs, and college festivals. They have been awarded the ‘Best Vocalist’ and ‘Best Rock Band’ by Indiego Awards 2011, the best independent South Asian music award. The concert is to take place at the Children’s Park, opposite Gold Souk, between 6 pm and 8 pm on December 1.
