New Delhi: A gas explosion at a residential building in Astrakhan, Russia, brought down a nine-storey building and injured 12 residents. Eleven others are still believed to be stuck in the debris. Reports say the blast blew out the lower section of the building. As people rushed in to help evacuate the victims, the upper storeys collapsed as well.
The explosion, possibly caused by natural gas, occurred on Monday in Astrakhan, 1300 kilometres southeast of Moscow.
An investigator said a store on the ground floor was the centre of what she called the "gas blast."
The ITAR-Tass news agency quoted the official as saying that the blast first blew out a lower section of the building. As people rushed to help, the upper six stories collapsed.
Explosions of gas canisters in Russian residences and businesses are common.
