Sixteen years in jail were more than enough for Saudha’s transition
from a culprit to a good-hearted woman. But unfortunately for her she is still
behind bars and her dream to go home after a 16-year-and-five-month-long jail
term is still under the mercy of the Governor.Sauda, 46, a native of Vazhappally, Changanassery,
convicted in a murder case was awarded rigorous life time imprisonment by the
Additional Sessions Court, Kottayam.
Though the Jail Advisory Board had recommended to the government, as it had the
privilege to do so in the case of prisoners who had completed 14 years in jail,
for her release there has been no response yet.“It has been six months since the recommendation was made
as her conduct in the jail was good. But the Governor is yet to sign on it. Her
family is also willing to receive her once she is released. They are all
waiting for the mercy of the Governor,” said A Nazeera Beevi, superintendent,
Women’s Jail, Attakkulangara, where Saudha is housed. There are two other prisoners, Lekshmi and Vijayamma, who
have also completed more than 10 years in prison but both are mentally unstable.Lekshmi, 55, hailing from Pampadi, Kottayam, who was also
convicted in a murder case, has not been sanctioned even a single parole yet. Vijayamma,
42, a native of Thodupuzha, was jailed in April, 1997, after she was convicted
in a murder case. She was sanctioned parole for the first time just a month ago.“Leskhmi and Vijaymma are suffering from mental problems. And
hence it is not sure that their relatives would accept them if they are
released from jail. But at least a better home can be arranged in some
destitute homes, if they are released. It is expected that their issue will be
raised in the next meeting of the Jail Advisory Board,” said Nazeera Beevi.“The fact remains that such a long tenure behind the bars
have been affecting the state of minds of these inmates which eventually made
inmates like Vijayamma and Leskhmi mentally ill,” said a warden of the jail.Meanwhile, 28-year-old Saritha, who is also mentally
unstable, would be released in a month. A native of Kottarakkara, Saritha was
convicted for killing her grandmother. As she was mentally ill at the time of
the crime she was awarded just three years imprisonment.
