But unfortunately for her she is stillbehind bars and her dream to go home after a 16-year-and-five-month-long jailterm is still under the mercy of the Governor.Sauda, 46, a native of Vazhappally, Changanassery,convicted in a murder case was awarded rigorous life time imprisonment by theAdditional Sessions Court, Kottayam.Though the Jail Advisory Board had recommended to the government, as it had theprivilege to do so in the case of prisoners who had completed 14 years in jail,for her release there has been no response yet.“It has been six months since the recommendation was madeas her conduct in the jail was good. But the Governor is yet to sign on it. Herfamily is also willing to receive her once she is released. They are allwaiting for the mercy of the Governor,” said A Nazeera Beevi, superintendent,Women’s Jail, Attakkulangara, where Saudha is housed.There are two other prisoners, Lekshmi and Vijayamma, whohave also completed more than 10 years in prison but both are mentally unstable.Lekshmi, 55, hailing from Pampadi, Kottayam, who was alsoconvicted in a murder case, has not been sanctioned even a single parole yet. Vijayamma,42, a native of Thodupuzha, was jailed in April, 1997, after she was convictedin a murder case. She was sanctioned parole for the first time just a month ago.“Leskhmi and Vijaymma are suffering from mental problems. Andhence it is not sure that their relatives would accept them if they arereleased from jail. But at least a better home can be arranged in somedestitute homes, if they are released. It is expected that their issue will beraised in the next meeting of the Jail Advisory Board,” said Nazeera Beevi.“The fact remains that such a long tenure behind the barshave been affecting the state of minds of these inmates which eventually madeinmates like Vijayamma and Leskhmi mentally ill,” said a warden of the jail.Meanwhile, 28-year-old Saritha, who is also mentallyunstable, would be released in a month. A native of Kottarakkara, Saritha wasconvicted for killing her grandmother.
