Cuddalore: A good monsoon would have meant a great harvest but that was before the rains transformed into floods.
The Kalthanda village in Cuddalore district, which was full of paddy crop, now resembles one large lake. After three days of torrential rain, all that is left in the village are broken homes and flooded fields.
All across the Cuddalore, Army and the district administration are distributing relief on rescue boats sailing on inundated paddy fields.
Major Edwin Raj who is a part of the Army rescue and relief operation says, "Some roads to villages have been opened up and it is easier taking the land route. However till such time as all roads are cleared the relief operation is being carried through boats."
Over the last three days, villagers had abandoned their homes and had taken refuge at the village graveyard.
Even as rescue work is on in full swing in the rain-hit villages of Tamil Nadu, relief has yet to reach this inundated village that has been marooned for almost three days.
Seventy-year-old Aiayasamy says he's lost everything he had. "The rice that I had stored in my home and my sheep have all been washed away. I have no land and I don?t know when I can start farming again. No relief has reached us yet."
But as work continues it's clear that it may take several weeks before the flooded areas return to normal.
