BHUBANESWAR: Retention of students beyond Class X has become a major concern for the Sainik Schools in the country even as they are striving hard to feed more number of officers into the Indian Armed Services. The Armed Forces in the country are becoming increasingly short-staffed, particularly at the level of officers. The Sainik Schools have been considered important establishments in not only reducing regional imbalances in feeding officers to the Armed Forces but also preparing batches of manpower who are physically and mentally attuned to the spirit of the Armed Forces.“The present scenario is reflective of the problem where more than 25 per cent of the students leave school after Class X, when they should ideally stay on and complete the Class XII. The Sainik School Bhubaneswar, however, has been able to feed significant number of officials to the Armed Forces,” principal, Sainik School, Bhubaneswar, Captain K S Noor said. The Sainik School here, which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year, has contributed more than 600 officers to the Armed Forces in the last 50 years. Some of them have scaled heights with General J K Mohanty becoming the first Odia to be appointed Army Commander and Air Marshal S K Bhan attaining the position of Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Air Command.A vision paper for all-round development of the school has been prepared in collaboration with XIMB which would be released as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. The process of establishment of the second Sainik School near Burla in Sambalpur district is also gaining pace with earmarking of 100 acre. “The finalisation of the MoU to be signed with the State Government is underway,” Capt Noor informed. The School in collaboration with the Old Boys’ Association has lined up a series of programmes for the Golden Jubilee celebrations. A mini marathon of students is scheduled for December 18. The celebrations on December 24 and 25 include shows by the Akash Ganga aerobatics team of the Indian Air Force, Dare Devil team of the Indian Army and the Indian Naval band. The India Post is also set to release a commemorative special first day cover on the Golden Jubilee of the School, president of Old Boys’ Association PC Basha told mediapersons here.
