Kolkata: The 11th Calcutta Film Festival got underway on Thursday amidst high security.

India has been on high alert following the triple blasts that rocked New Delhi in October killing 66 people.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy inaugurated the festival, which is being organised by the International Forum of New Cinema and Cine Central under the aegis of the Calcutta Film Festival.

The seven-day long festival is showcasing 140 films including 67 films from 26 foreign countries.

"Festivals like these serve as a good learning ground to keep in touch with world cinema," Bengali actress Churni Ganguly said.

"I think it's only once a year that we get to know what's happening all over the world in films," Ganguly added.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made at the festival venue. "This time it (security) is on a little higher scale because a lot of foreign dignitaries are coming," police officer N R Babu said.

"There is no threat as such but we have taken all the precautionary measures," Babu added.

Delegates 32 countries are attending the festival. The various films will be shown at Nandan, Rabindra Sadan, Sisir Mancha, New Empire and Purnasree theatres in Kolkata.
