Security tightened in city after Mumbai blasts

CHENNAI: State police have beefed up security across the State following Wednesday’s blasts in Mumbai.Revenue officials were coordinating with police to keep vigil on sensitive areas.The Tamil Nadu police, Railway police, Coastal Security Group, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Revenue administration were working in tandem to keep vigil on the movement of suspicious persons. Police personnel in mufti have been monitoring sensitive and crowded places like railway stations, bus stands, places of worship and recreation spots.“Instructions have been passed on to all city police commissioners and district superintendents of police to intensify security operations in their respective jurisdictions in coordination with the Revenue department,” said a senior police official.Sunil Kumar, Inspector General of Police, Railways told Express that they had coordinated with all District Collectors and Revenue officers had been deployed to monitor the movement of suspicous persons outside the major railway stations.Railway police had been deployed to check people passing through the entry and exit points at railway stations and special teams were also conducting random checks on platforms and in moving trains.The CISF was conducting anti-sabotage checks at the domestic and international terminals of the Chennai Airport and specials teams were inspecting vehicles at the entry to the airport round the clock.In Chennai, officers of the rank of deputy commissioner of police were overseeing security operations in North, Central and South zones. Apart from intensive vehicle checks, the police have also been removing abandoned vehicles.City border checkposts such as the MRF checkpost, Karanodai checkpost on Ennore Expressway road and Moolakadai checkpost had been brought under tight security. Suburban police were also conducting antisabotage measures.
