BANGALORE: The first de novo sequencing of neem has been completed according to city-based Ganit Labs. According to the company, they have unravelled the genome and coding parts in their analysis of the neem plant. Making the announcement, the company officials confirmed that they are a non-profit organisation and are working on the Private Partnership (PPP) model. The 10-member team completed the project at an estimated cost of Rs. 30 lakh. Binay Panda, Head of Ganit Labs, shared that neem was used extensively by the rural populace and its significant qualities are well known, and they now provided the required scientific data to reassert the same.“This information would also serve as the basis for future research and study by scientists and research students”, Panda added.The Department of IT/BT, Science and Technology has reiterated its support for such biotechnological progress. M N Vidyashankar, principal secretary of the department said that the findings of the project would prove very useful in the future in all areas.
