Budapest: Simona Halep won her third WTA tournament of the year by defeating Yvonne Meusburger 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-1 Sunday in the final of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Romanian 21-year-old lost the first three finals of her career but has now compiled a 16-1 record since the French Open, also winning titles in Nuremberg, Germany, and Rosmalen, Netherlands.
In the second set, Halep recovered from being down 3-5 but then squandered three match points before Austria's Meusburger won the tiebreaker. Halep relied on well-placed drop shots in the third set and broke Meusburger three times.
Halep said "it was a very difficult match because Yvonne played very well, especially in the second set when I also made a lot of mistakes. Then I changed tactics, applied more drop shots and that worked."
