CHENNAI: Ayak Seva Kendra, a single window system for computerised registration of all taxpayers’ applications will be commissioned in Chennai, Madurai, Salem & Tiruchy, by this month end, said Gyan Chand Jain, CCIT-I, Tamil Nadu Region, here on Wednesday.Speaking to the media, he said that a 15 per cent rise in the net total direct tax collection was reported by the Income Tax department in TN and Puducherry in comparison to the corresponding period in the previous financial year. Besides, he said that the region had achieved 92 per cent of its target of `14,808 crore in collection of Tax Deduction at Source (TDS), amounting to `13,650 crore. A government department liable for `10.57 crore of TDS had remitted only `5.97 crore and a private company liable for `22.17 crore of TDS had remitted only `10.56 crore despite deducting the entire liability of TDS from the staff/employees,” he said. Interestingly, three special tahsildars who were doing land-acquisition for Chennai Metro Rail Limited and had paid compensation `368 crore for the compulsory land acquisition long back had not paid a single penny in TDS thus far, the CCIT noted. “We have issued notices as to why the money was not paid and if their response are not satisfactory, then necessary actions would be initiated,” he said.“As much as four lakh high value transaction details have been collected, for the period 2005 to present, where PAN was not declared, he said and added that the cases were being probed by the department.” Companies liable to pay minimum alternate tax (MAT) will have to pay the advance tax on or before March 15. It can be paid until March 31 with penalty, the CCIT added.
