New Delhi: At least eight civilians have been killed in a mortar attack in Batticaloa in Sri Lanka.

The army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are blaming each other for the attack, in which two children died.

The Sri Lankan army also says that a roadside bomb planted by the rebels has killed five soldiers in Vavuniya in the north of the country.

The mortar fire hit villages in Morakotchchenai in Batticaloa and the injured were rushed to hospitals, officials added.

Government troops have been engaging the rebels for several weeks to flush out the LTTE from Thoppigala, which is the last rebel stronghold in the eastern Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

A few days ago, seven people died in an LTTE attack when a Tamil rebel drove a tractor and trailer packed with explosives into the Chenkaladi army camp in Batticaloa.

In a pre-dawn attack on Monday, LTTE for the first time ever executed an air raid on Sri lankan Forces at the Sri Lankan Air Force base north of Colombo.

Three people were killed and atleast 16 injured when rebels used air power to bomb the Air Force base adjoining Colombo's international airport.
