VELLORE: The first phase of distribution of biometric smart cards to those who receive assistance under the various welfare schemes will begin in select 121 villages of the district with a population above 2,000 from February 20.The Department of Social Welfare had announced the smart card scheme, which will help disbursal of assistance through nationalised banks, doing away with the practice using post offices for the purpose.According to collector Ajay Yadav, the beneficiaries, who presently do not have bank accounts have been encouraged to open one in the nearest bank. The scheme would be launched at Thippasamudram in Vellore taluk, Kilmuttukur (Katpadi), Ananganallur (Gudiyatham), Asanampattu (Ambur), Nayakanur (Vaniyambadi), Sorakkalnatham (Tirupattur), Govindaserikuppam (Wallajah), Nagarikuppam (Arakkonam) and Arumbakkam (Arcot taluk). The beneficiaries from these villages have been advised to get the smart cards from the office of the Village Administrative Officer by producing a copy of their ration card and three passport sized photographs.
