Somdev defeats Taipei, wins 1st Davis Cup match
The country is confident about her performance in Chennai Open.

Kolkata: He showed glimpses of what he could do at the Chennai Open and now Somdev Dev Varman's performance against Chinese Taipei has justified his tag as India's most promising youngster in the sport.

Somdev gave India the lead in the tie. He won his first Davis Cup match against Ti Chen and then proceeded to clinch the tie with a comprehensive straight-set win in the reverse singles. He defeated world number 59 Yen-Hsun Lu.

But the big headache now seems to be the absence of a better second singles player, as Rohan Bopanna flopped yet again.

He came back into the squad to replace Prakash Amritraj, who's been left out in the cold by the government directive that makes possession of an Indian passport an absolute must. But being on the winning side always gives you the confidence of doing one better.

The World Group play-offs beckon as India will look to replenish their punch in time. And with the next tie at home the advantage will be with India.

What's your reaction?
