State Dept warns Americans against travel to Pak
State Dept warning says Americans could be targeted by al-Qaeda and Taliban elements in Pak.

Washington: The US State Department has re-issued a travel warning for Pakistan that said the threat of terrorist activity makes non-essential travel there too dangerous.

The warning, superseding the one issued 10 months ago, said Americans could be targeted by al-Qaeda and Taliban elements as well as members of sectarian Pakistani groups active in the South Asian country.

The warning notes that terrorists have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where Westerners are known to congregate or visit, such as hotels, clubs and restaurants, places of worship, schools or outdoor recreation events.

The travel warning asked US citizens travelling to Pakistan to register with the embassy in Islamabad or the consulates in Karachi, Lahore or Peshawar or online at http://travelregistration.state.gov to obtain updated information on terrorism in Pakistan.

It also cautioned Americans currently in Pakistan to maintain a good situational awareness, avoid crowds and demonstrations and keep a low profile.

Pervasive violence in the Middle East could increase the danger not only for Americans but for other Westerners as well, the State Department warning said.
