Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Kharge said three more Employment State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospitals will come up in the state for the benefit of the workers.
Inaugurating the ESIC model hospital-Jayadeva Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Research on Tuesday, Kharge said, “The ESIC hospitals with 100-bed capacity will come up in Doddaballapura, Bommasandra and Nanjangud. Centre will grant Rs 100 crore for the establishment of the hospitals.”
He said discussions were being held to set-up a ESIC model hospital and medical college in Gulbarga. “We have urged Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to sign a MoU,” he said.
“As many as 20 ESIC medical colleges and hospitals have been approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Five medical colleges will be started in the next academic year in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh. Today, with the establishment of ESIC model hospital in association with Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiac Science and Research, a history has been created in Karnataka,” Kharge said.
He added that all the states in the country had failed to utilise the monetary assistance given to them to upgrade ESIC hospitals.
“As much as 87.5 per cent of the grants is given to the state government to improvise ESIC hospitals in terms of infrastructure. But all the states have failed to use it. There is a lack of medical staff at ESIC hospitals as the recruitment of doctors has not been done,” Kharge rued.
He lauded the efforts put forth in making the ESIC model hospital where even post-graduate medical courses are conducted.
“Doctors of Sri Jayadeva Institute must regularly visit ESIC hospitals to encourage the new set-up and instil confidence among the new staff and patients. Adequate training must be given to the team members.”
Jayadeva Hospital Director Dr C N Manjunath said the Rs 10-crore-project will run on the equipment, operation and manage (EOM) model as per the agreement between ESIC and Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Research.
The ESIC will provide space for the cardiology centre while the latest equipment and techniques will be installed by the Institute.
