Three members of a farmer's family and another farmer were killed because of a suspected poisonous gas emanating from a well in Imlia village in Badwara tehsil, about 50 km away from the Katni district.
The incident occurred, on Thursday when a farmer identified as Ramsingh Raghuwanshi and his son Sandeep climbed down into a well to fix a motor-pump, the police said on Friday.
When they failed to come out after a while, his wife Vimlabai raised an alarm and climbed down into the well in search of them.
Later, another farmer, identified as Kripashankar Singh also went down the well to search for them after responding to the alarm raised by Vimlabai.
However, all four of them died inside the well as they had inhaled a suspected poisonous gas emanating from the well.
Later, the police fished out their bodies and handed them over to their family members for last rites, after autopsy.
Katni Collector Ashok Singh said that a probe is on to find out the type of gas which emanated from the well.
The district administration has announced an immediate ex-gratia payment of Rs 10,000 to the kin of those killed in the incident and also assured relief to them from other sources.
