New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar was at the helm as the Mukesh Ambani-owned Mumbai franchisee unveiled its Twenty20 team for the Indian Premier League and he was formally named captain of the team, which will be called the Mumbai Indians.
The team also features big hitters like Sanath Jayasuriya and Robin Uthappa. Shaun Pollock and Harbhajan Singh will form the bowling mainstay.
Tendulkar, who skipped the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa last year, claimed that the IPL tournament would be a "super hit".
"Twenty20 cricket is hugely popular everywhere and I have no doubt the IPL will be a super hit. I as well as all the players are excited about the IPL. We are all looking forward to it. Twenty20 format has been hugely popular everywhere as it can be used as a family outing," he was quoted as saying by PTI.
He also asked the fans to support his team.
"When the IPL auction was held, we were all in Australia and had to focus on the One-Dayers. I want to request all the Mumbaikars to come and support our team," he said.
He also dispelled concerns that he will not be available for the Test series against South Africa because of injury concerns.
"But at the moment, our focus is on the coming Test series against South Africa (starting in Chennai on March 26). Once it ends, our team members will sit together and have discussions on strategies (to adopt in IPL)," Tendulkar said.
