A 27-year-old bus attendant of a third-party tour company was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly molested eight students of Class II – six girls and two boys – of a Thane-based private school during a picnic on Tuesday, informed police. The attendant was arrested following a complaint lodged by the parents of the students.

The attendant, Javed Mohammad Khan, inappropriately touched the children of age group seven to eight years while serving them food in the bus, which was heading to their picnic, police said. The picnic was organised at a theme park in Ghatkopar in eastern Mumbai.

“The accused touched the eight children, including girls and two boys, in an inappropriate manner while he was distributing the food packets. All the children were students of Class 2. We have arrested him and we are taking him to the court,” Inspector Sandeep Dhande was quoted by Indian Express.

The police have filed a complaint against the accused under sections 354, 354(A) and 509 of the Indian Penal Code as well as relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The incident came to light after the children reported the abuse to their parents after reaching their homes. The upset parents soon reached out to the school authorities immediately regarding the incident and lodged a complaint during the early hours of Wednesday.

Investigation in the matter is underway.
