The feminine side of Commonwealth
The Commonwealth wants to rope in women so that gender related issues and entrepreneurial matters can be discussed.

New Delhi: As Commonwealth strives to become more international it is looking to bring more and more women into its folds.

Most of the countries that are members of the Commonwealth Network are developing nations and a lot of issues that are discussed are related to gender and how women can be involved in the mainstream economy.

The initiative to involve more women in the functioning of the Commonwealth was given a new push at the heads of government meet in Malta in November.

The move could give Indian businesswomen a lead position in this kind of networking.

"Indian women make great entrepreneurs. Add to this, the repository of information in India and we have a winning combination," says Commonwealth Secretariat official, Sarojini Ganju Thakur.

"There are already various examples where Indian women have influenced African countries. Vadra Chatrapali, a resident of South India trained 20 African women on how to set up their own enterprises and turn them into successful ventures. These African women have managed to do very well for themselves," she adds.

Women in India have a wealth of experience in entrepreneurial matters that the Commonwealth feels can be shared with women all over the world.
