This 900-year-old Kerala Temple Has A Connection With Mahabharat

The beautiful town of Puliyoor in the Alappuzha District, Kerala is known for its historical significance. The village is located around 90 km away from Ernakulam. This village is very famous for its ancient Vishnu temple, which is more than 900 years old. The temple is known by the name Thripuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple. It is one of the five ancient shrines in the Chengannur area of Kerala that has a connection with the Pandavas in Mahabharat. The Pandavas after crowning Parikshit as king of Hastinapura left for pilgrimage. When they arrived on the bank of River Pamba, each of them built temples. This is one of those temples.

The temple is reportedly dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Aratu festival, which is commemorated during the Tamil month of Margali, is celebrated in this temple with great pomp. The temple remains open from 4 am to 11 am in the morning. Then it again opens at 5 pm and remains open till 8 pm. The historical site is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board under the Government of Kerala.

The temple is also a site for popular rituals called Bali Tharpanam. Every year, thousands of people visit this temple to perform these rituals. It is one of the main temples in the district of Alappuzha District where Bali Tharpanam is conducted. The temple is a very popular point of attraction for people visiting the state of Kerala.
