Kolkata: In a tragic incident, two college students – actively involved in anti-suicide and stop life risk selfie campaigns – were run over by a train on tracks between Dum Dum and Belghoria Railway Station in the northern fringes of Kolkata on Monday.

The victims were identified as Sunil Tanti (19) and Shoishob Dolui (20) – both residents of Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district. They were students of Surendranath and Bangabasi College in Kolkata.

It was learned that both of them were actively involved in anti-suicide campaign and mass awareness programme on stop risky selfies.

On Monday, both of them along with a videographer Shounadip Santra went to the railway tracks for a video shoot for their anti-suicide campaign.

The incident took place when Shoishob was playing the role of a college student who wanted to commit suicide by jumping in front of a train because he failed in the examination, while Sunil was playing the role of a friend who was trying to convince him not to give up in life.

Speaking to News18, the videographer Shounadip, said, “Both of them were engrossed in acting and I was shooting the video. Whenever we saw a train approaching we moved away. Since it was a busy track, we have to do the same multiple times. But this time, I shouted but they failed to realise.”

Superintendent of Railway Police, Sealdah, Ashesh Biswas said, “While going through the video recording - we found that all of them were engrossed in shooting and could not hear the oncoming train.”
