CHENNAI: The case of Thiruvottiyur Chelladurai, a fisherman belonging to KVK Kuppam who went missing in 2006, has been resurrected with the arrest of former DMK fisheries minister KPP Samy, here on Saturday. Chelladurai went missing after questioning the then ministerabout post-tsunami rehabilitation funds that had benn allocated to his village but that had allegedly not reached the people. “A case has been pending in court in connection with this issue. Later, when Chelladurai went missing, his wife filed a petition to find her husband in 2006. That case has also been pending with the court,” a senior police official said.Arumugam, Chelladurai’s brother claimed that Premavathy, Chelladurai’s wife, had lodged a complaint with the then Chennai police commissioner in 2006, after no action was taken on a missing person complaint she had registered at the Thiruvottiyur police station.In August of this year, Premavathy once again lodged a complaint with the current police commissioner JK Tripathy. The case was then re-investigated. According to Premavathy, several villagers had seen her husband being taken away by the former minister’s brothers and their men. The case was then changed from that of a missing person to murder. Following the re-investigation, police said they arrested two persons Kumar and Yobu alias Tyson. After these arrests, three persons, including two of KPP Samy’s brothers, KPP Sankar and KPP Chokkalingam surrendered at a court.On Saturday morning, police teams led by the Washermenpet deputy commissioner of police Avinash Kumar, arrested KPP Samy. Police said Samy had given them a statement and had been remanded to judicial custody. “He could be involved in three other cases including the case of a missing fisherman named Velu. We are still investigating,” added the police official.
