BANGALORE: Barely days after Tumkur University was accorded with 12(B) status (self-financing), the university now has another feather to its cap. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognised the University as ‘educational institution of national eminence.’ Also, the Directorate of Income Tax (Exemptions) has approved income tax exemption towards donations under Section 80G (2) (a) (iiif) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Following this, Vice-Chancellor Dr S C Sharma told Express that he wants to rope in industries for ambitious projects. “The tag of national eminence is due to the strength of our faculty,” he said. Dr Sharma is planning to invite Tata industries for setting up a state-of-the-art Nano Centre on the lines of Stanford School of Engineering . “The University is involved in nano and advanced materials’ research. To up the ante, I want to invite Tata to set-up an exclusive Nano Centre. I will also write to the Dept of Science and Technology and Defence Research & Development Organisation for their participation,” he said. With projects close to Rs 3.5 crore already sanctioned by organisations like DST and ISRO, the university is involved in active advanced materials research.
