Ranchi: Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday hoisted India's tallest and largest Tricolour atop the famous Pahari Mandir in Ranchi on the occasion of 119th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
The Pahari Mandir is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in Jharkhand. The Tricolour is 66 feet in height, 99 feet in width and it is hoisted on a 293 feet tall pole.
On the sidelines of the event, Parrikar, said, "It is a proud moment for me to unfurl the largest and tallest Indian national flag on the occasion of 119th Netaji’s birth anniversary."
"Jharkhand has given a lot to the country. It contributes nearly 40 per cent of minerals in India. Unfortunately, despite having potentials this state was neglected for years. Now, with the new government in Jharkhand, I can assure that no one can stop its development. The central government will provide all kind of assistance to make this state a global investment hub," he said.
The minister also laid online foundation of the Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University (defence universities).
He said the upcoming defence university would be a tribute to Param Vir Chakra awardee Albert Ekka. Lance Naik Albert Ekka, was a soldier in the Indian army. He died in service in the Battle of Hilli, during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, Governor Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister said, "We will try to get the defence university operational from 2016-17 session onwards."
