A security alert was sounded soon after the terror attack in Kashmir.

Srinagar: Two policemen shot dead by suspected terrorists in poll-bound Anantnag town of south Kashmir on Saturday.

Terrorists opened fire on a police party at General Bus Stand in Anantnag town around 11.20 am. The firing lasted for more than 10 minutes. Preliminary reports suggest militants were hiding in a vehicle parked in the bus stand.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack and the terrorists managed to flee. Soon after the incident the injured policemen were shifted to hospital where they were declared dead.

The number of militants involved in the attack could not be confirmed immediately. A security alert was sounded after the terror attack, with checkpoints and random frisking carried out on major roads leading to the city.

On Friday, three BSF personnel were killed and nine injured when militants ambushed a BSF convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir.

The attack comes ahead of the June 22 polling for by-election to Anantnag Assembly seat where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is one of the nine candidates in the fray.

The by-poll for the seat was necessitated due to death of then chief minister and incumbent MLA Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7 this year. This is second attack in less than 24 hours in the district.
