Uddhav attributes waiver of farm loan to farmers' unity
Shiv Sena will study the Budget impact on Vidarbha and Marathwada.

Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said "farmers' unity" had forced the government to waive off their loans and that many suicides could have been prevented had the step been taken earlier.

"I attribute this loan waiver to farmers to their unity. The waiver should have come about much earlier as it could have averted many suicides," said Thackeray while reacting to governments decision to waive farm loans.

He said "now that the package has been announced we will study its impact in Vidarbha and Marathwada".

Thackeray said the waiver would give relief to only those farmers who have taken money from financial institutions.

"But what about those farmers who had taken loan at varied interest rates from private money lenders," he said.

Thackeray said now that centre has done its work, it is upon the state to waive other loans as we have seen in the case of Tamil Nadu.

Taking a dig at ruling NCP in Maharashtra, he said if the NCP wanted to take credit for the proposal, it should "also own up the responsibility for the farmers' suicide".

He said his party "would felicitate NCP" if it weeds out the private money lenders who are chiefly responsible for the woes of the farmers.

Thackeray added it was also imperative to see that farmers do not get stuck into the vicious cycle of debt again.
