New Delhi: The Volcker Committee report on the Oil-for-Food scam has shaken the Indian government. However, senior United Nations officials refuse to comment on specific instances or individuals and stress the report is more about UN reform.
Senior United Nations officials accept that there have been complaints from governments about flaws in the report. And UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has written to head of governments to examine the report seriously.
"This is the final report as far as the UN is concerned. It is upto the national authorities to investigate in a case-by-case basis if required," Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information, United Nations, said.
"Governments have every reason to challenge whatever details they find unacceptable to them," Tharoor added.
Tharoor further said that Volker?s mandate is principally linked to what went wrong at the UN. In the process he has uncovered these documents and its upto each national system to decide what to do with them.
United Nations officials know that there has been growing criticism regarding the authenticity of the source material and that the report may be questionable.
The Volcker Committee report will remain in the realm of discussion in the near future. For now, governments like that in India are free to decide what to do with its contents and allegations.
