New Delhi: India's Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi seeded fourth at this year's US Open overcame their first hurdle at the 2011 US Open with a straight sets win over Alexandr Dolgopolov (Ukraine) and Albert Ramos (Spain) at Flushing Meadows in New York.
Paes and Bhupathi won 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 to reach the second round and await the winner of the match between Florian Mayer/ Rogier Wassen and Marc Gicquel/Gael Monfils.
There was further good news for the Indians when Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Qureshi of Pakistan won their first round clash against Robby Ginepri and Rhyne Williams of the United States.
The Indo-Pak Express recovered from a second set hiccup to beat the American duo 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
In the women's singles event, Sania Mirza's campaign came to a disappointing end as she was defeated by Israel's Shahar Peer, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-6 in the first round.
Sania and her Russian partner Elena Vesnina will take on Americans, Samantha Crawford and Madison Keys in their opening round match of the women's doubles event.
