Uttarakhand govt for CBI probe into Ranbir's killing
The family of Ranbir Singh allege that he was tortured and killed.

Dehradun: Bowing to pressure from various quarters, Uttarakhand Government on Wednesday recommended to the Centre to order a CBI probe into the killing of an MBA graduate in an alleged fake encounter last Friday.

"A CBI probe into Ranbir Singh encounter case has been recommended," Chief Secretary I K Pande said.

The state government had earlier handed the probe to CB-CID into the the killing of the 22-year-old youth from Ghaziabad who was gunned down by Uttarakhand police after he allegedly fled with a revolver of a sub-inspector when stopped by police during checking.

However, after an autopsy report revealed that he was shot from close range and may have been tortured, there was mounting pressure for a CBI probe from his family, opposition Congress as well as leaders of BJP and RLD. A case of murder has already been registered against 14 police officials involved in the encounter.

Official sources said Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishnak after consulting his cabinet colleagues and other political advisers gave the orders for the CBI probe.

The National Human Rights Commission had also demanded a CBI probe into the incident saying, "truth should come out expeditiously".
