New Delhi: Marriages are made in heaven! But if it's Akshaya Trithiya, there is no time to wait even for heavenly intervention.
Or so it seems if one considers the number of marriages being solemnized in Delhi on this auspicious day.
Akshaya Trithiya is considered to be an auspicious day for more reasons than one. Not only is it an ideal day to buy gold and precious metals, the day also serves as a perfect occasion to tie the knot.
And Delhiites have taken the cue, for over 10,000 couples in the city are getting married on Sunday.
According to the Puranas, Akshaya Trithiya is one of the most sacred days, being the birthday of Parshurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This day is considered the most auspicious for marriages and wealth accumulation.
And so, as expected, there has been an intense demand for hall bookings for marriages on this day. “We could manage to book a single community hall even though we had begun the hunt several months in advance. Finally, we settled for a venue in Gurgaon, but that too at an exorbitant price,” says Prashant Verma, father of Ragini, who’s getting married on Sunday,
But some couldn’t manage to book halls and had to settle for school playing grounds instead. But then venue doesn’t seem to be a priority.
Pandits, too, are having a busy day, hopping from one venue to another. Pandit Arup Mishra said: “I am solemnizing four marriages on Sunday and all four are in different corners of Delhi. I will have to rush from one place to the other.”
