Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday charged that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was behind the violence in Silchar that left 30 people injured.
"BJP, VHP and other associates are communal... VHP is behind last night's violence at Silchar. They are creating communal tension and trying to divide the society on the basis of religion," Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati. VHP is trying to create such hatred at many other places in the state, he charged.
"...but people of Assam are aware. We are also taking it very seriously and asked the authorities to handle it very strictly," Gogoi said. He further said that VHP and other Sangh Parivar outfits were trying to revive the Ram temple issue again and organise rath yatra in the state, but the state government would not allow this to happen.
Last night, at least 30 people, including the Superintendent of Police and his seven other colleagues, were injured in police firing after a mob went on a rampage at Rongpur area after reports of some objectionable items being found at three places of worship.
