New Delhi: Apparently leaving the BJP in cold, the VHP on Sunday decided to support candidates who pledge to work for the interests of Hindus in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and not any particular political party.
Irrespective of the party colours of candidates, VHP, as part of this policy, will give them a list of their demands which include among others a ban on cow slaughter and construction of a Ram Temple at Ayodhya.
"We have not decided to support any political party. We will only back those candidates who are ready to work for the interests of Hindus," VHP leader Ashok Singhal told PTI.
The VHP has decided to form a platform (Hindu voter forum), which will take out 11 yatras from different parts of UP all through this month to meet the candidates in person to know their ideological affilitations.
"We will give each candidate a declaration form containing our demands. If he is ready to support the Hindu cause, he can sign it and we will extend our support to him," Singhal explained.
The VHP leader accused all political parties in Uttar Pradesh of appeasing Muslims to gain votes and lamented that "no body was working for the interests of Hindus in the state".
Other demands include crackdown on jihadi terrorism, funds for development of Hindu pilgrimage centres, ban on religious conversion, protection of the Ganges and return of government controlled temples and mutts to devotees.
Singhal refused to comment on BJP distancing itself from the controversial CD, saying it was the party's internal matter but favoured bringing out such material to "show the plight of Hindus in the country".
