Lahore: Violence erupted in Lahore and Karachi on Friday evening after a leading Shia cleric, Allama Hassan Turabi was killed in a sucide bomb attack.

Angry Shia supporters in Lahore and Karachi took to the streets, crying and beating their chests.

The identity of the suicide attacker is not known but many suspect the attacker was a Sunni.

Turabi addressed an anti-Israel and anti-US rally in Karachi a few hours before the suicide bomber struck. The bomber detonated as Hassan Tarabi was leaving his home in the Abbas Town neighborhood of Karachi, authorities said Friday.

Tarabi's nephew, a police guard - as well as the bomber - were also killed. The police have cordoned off the area.

The tension is expected to rise as the funeral takes place on Saturday and the killing has prompted a security alert in the two cities.
