At the foothills of Ambasamudram of Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, a leopard has been creating havoc after hunting sheep and other livestock in the area. Farmer Shankar, who hails from Vembaiyapuram, rears livestock including goats and cows in his house.
A tragic incident took place at his farm after he went to sleep. As usual, he tied up the goats and left to sleep. After he woke up, Shankar saw that his goats disappeared. He saw blood lying in the area and continued to look after it. He later saw the body of a goat at a distance.
After discovering the body on his farm, he contacted the forest department. They came to the spot within an hour and decided to catch the leopard by setting the cage. On behalf of the Tirunelveli District Forest Department, for the first time, sniffer dogs were used in a search for a leopard. It was later caught at Vembaiyapuram near Ambasamudram.

While the villagers feared that the leopard would hunt humans after the livestock, the trapped animal in the cage has brought relief to the people of the area.
Recently, the forest officials in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) successfully captured a large leopard responsible for the killings of numerous farm animals a month prior in Erode, Tamil Nadu. The incident came to light after the leopard infiltrated a cattle shed located within the Thalavadi forest range under the STR. As per the report of TOI, the leopard killed six goats, 20 poultry birds, two calves of a cow and five dogs. The shed belonged to Bhagayalakshmi. After filing the complaint, the forest officials placed a cage near her plot to catch the leopard. The captured leopard was subsequently transported by the forest officials to a remote area in the forest.
