SALEM: Former Deputy Mayor and Mayor incharge S Soundappan was taken by surprise as Chief Minister J Jayalalitha announced him as the mayor candidate for Salem Corporation. Not a heavyweight in the party and in politics ruled by money and muscle power, Soundappan is a weaver-cum-theatre artiste. He owns a government identity card given to impoverished stage artistes. A two-time councillor, Soundappan was the deputy mayor in 2001-2006 period. He was also mayor incharge for six months when the then mayor R Sureshkumar resigned for contesting in the Assembly elections. “I least expected that Amma will select me as the candidate. This proves that a person’s background is not a matter with our leader,” he said. Soundappan said if elected he will complete all the major projects, including the exclusive drinking water scheme and the underground drainage project.
