International Coastal Cleanup Day was organised by the Indian Coast Guard Region (East) and got underway to an extremely early start by 7 am. People from various walks of life joined hands and collected garbage all along the Chennai Coastline right from Marina Beach to Marakkanam in Villupuram district.At Marina Beach and Elliots Beach around 1,500 personnel from various units of Coast Guard, students from various schools, colleges and NGOs and volunteers from general public spread themselves across the area and enthusiastically collected four tonnes of garbage at Marina and one tonne at Elliots Beach. The clean-up drive was inaugurated by Gunasekaran, Chief Wildlife Warden of Tamil Nadu.Gunasekaran stressed that keeping the beaches and sea clean and free from all kinds of pollution will have an impact in the future. He also requested the public to keep the coast safe, hygienic and secure to enable more tourists to visit the beach and enjoy its beauty being the second largest beach in the world and thanked all the participants who executed the task.Meanwhile, a massive coastal clean-up drive was held in the fishing hamlet of Pulicat lake (Pazhaverkadu).
