The Supreme Court on Thursday heard its suo motu petition in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and noted that there were several loopholes in the initial probe conducted by the Kolkata Police. The top court observed that the medical facility’s former chief, Sandip Ghosh, had not taken proper steps in the case and asked who he was protecting.
After the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case, told the Supreme Court on Thursday that they were handed the investigation on Day 5 and everything was “altered” by then, the top court questioned the state, the court heard responses from the state government, CBI, and agitating doctors.
It observed that the post-mortem was done first in a hurried manner and then a case of unnatural death was registered. The court said it was against the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) guidelines and reprimanded the state government.
The court expressed surprise and asked, “Why Sandip Gosh did not file an FIR? Who was he in touch with and who was he protecting?”
The court said no coercive action should be taken against the agitating doctors and urged the doctors to return to work, adding that the hearing will resume on September 5.
