Why Pankaj Kapur as the lecherous old painter Don Pedro in 'Finding Fanny' is one of Indian cinema's most interesting artists
Kapur, who was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj's 2013 film 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', is hilarious as the eccentric painter.

New Delhi: Wiping his hand across the scraggy stubble, the old, cynical artist Don Pedro Cleto Colaco looks leeringly at the the voluptuous old widow Rosie Eucharistica. "I want to paint you," he says, bowing down low in a smooth movement. The older, but still attractive woman, blinks, taken aback. But she's clearly impressed.

This scene, from the upcoming film 'Finding Fanny' is certain to bring a smile to the audience's face. Critically-acclaimed actor Pankaj Kapur is simply perfect as the lecherous, eccentric, funny and very "real" artist Don Pedro. And actress Dimple Kapadia is charmingly convincing as the loud, selfish and sexually-charged old widow, Rosie.

'Finding Fanny' a English/Hindi film which is set to hit the theatres on September 12, has been directed by 'Being Cyrus' and 'Cocktail' director Homi Adajania. The film, stars Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Kapadia and Kapur in key roles.

The following article may contain spoilers for the film 'Finding Fanny'. If you haven't seen the film, come back to the article later.

The film, which borders from average to slow in most parts, is raised above the ordinary by these two veteran actors, particularly Kapur. Don't get us wrong, Naseeruddin Shah as the bumbling Ferdie is charming and endearing, but the performance (or the role itself, to be fair) doesn't come anywhere close to what Kapur delivers.

"I got a very good vibe from Homi. I felt very comfortable in his presence. I felt he was chilled out and a nice guy who came up with an interesting script. He gave me a lot of confidence as a person. The kind of role I play in the film is very unique and something that I have never done before," Kapur said in an interview to PTI.

Kapur, who was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj's 2013 film 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', is hilarious as the MF Hussain-esque painter. With lines full of double meanings and incessant ogling at the voluptuous lady, their little banters and awkward scenes are some of the high points of the film.

In one of the particularly hilarious scenes, Don Pedro is riding in a car with the rest of the motley bunch. Rosie has fallen asleep, and Pedro takes this opportunity to whip out his sketch book and slyly slide Rosie's skirt above her knee. He then hastily begins to draw in his little book. "What are you doing," asks Deepika Padukone as Angie. Lost for words, Pedro fumbles, tugs at his neck-scarf and stars singing loudly, to the astonishment of others. A few moments later, he starts doing the same things! Oh, and he also refers to Rosie's pet cat as 'pussy'.

Kapur also gets to share some hilarious but meaningful lines with Naseeruddin Shah. Shah as Ferdie, who's afraid of the dark, refuses to go out in search of fuel, and they're stuck at some random countryside. Ferdie insists on going in the morning, as he's afraid of the dark. Don Pedro, who wants to get rid of him so that he can continue with his seduction techniques, responds, "You should go now! It is very difficult to overcome the fear of dark, especially in the day. Too much light my dear."

"It's a great pleasure to work with fine actors, and Naseer is one of the finest actors that we have. It is always great working with him but in this given case, the three other actors were quite a joy too. They had a down-to-earth approach, great professionalism and discipline towards their craft," Kapur said in an interview to PTI.

60-year-old Kapur will now reportedly be seen in Vikas Bahl's upcoming film 'Shaandaar'. Going by his glorious track-record, we can't wait to see what this brilliant, versatile actor will do next.
