WIll all this matter if...

And the saddest thing, if this virus manages to mutate human to human, we're not prepared...we're just not prepared.Like Anthrax, Sars, Small Pox and so many other Pandemics that we've seen over the years...this one too raises that one question...in the event that this happens..and if some disease does manage to take over every counrty...then will everything we do...everything we've achieved so far, everything we crave for...will any of that matter anymore?Our politicians, our celebrities and their constant need to appear on Page 1, our celebrated musicians and artists who've build this plastic world around them that seems largely escapist, and our sports stars....the fact is...if some large scale catastrophe hit this planet...then all their accomplishments, their awards, their titles...none of that would matter....because no matter who it is...their death beds would be right next to each other...like the American epidemimc(in 1981. if i heard correctly..)...they burried some twenty five thousand people in a trench because there was no way to cremate the dead...and at that point..one of the major efforts was to despose the bodies..because that was going to spread the virus faster...anyway..the fact is...then would any of what we do in our daily lives matter?It's petty I know...but our grudges, fears, insecurities...and even our indulgences....the fact that we live our lives trying to make a fortune so we can buy what ever we need.....in the event that something like this happens....our Gucci and Pradas are not going to matter...no one's going to care if you're drinking water off a tap or if it's avion....and most importantly...the struggle to mearly survive will be above all nonsense like office politics, bitching, back biting....that consumes so much of our time..One wonders then...why do we spend such a huge part of our life achieving something that only seems commendable as long as the world is perfect. the struggle to move towards buying the most expensive cell phone..the coolest car...winning beauty pageants...bikini contests..will any of that matter when you know it's all going to end...What a pity...we'll loose so much if a killer disease gets us all...but like all these years...and the hundreds of dreadful diseases that have been stopped from becoming giant killer waves...hopefully this too will just become a thing of the past....and I'm certain it will....But I just can't help but wonder..really what if we can't avert this...then will any of this matter?Parasfirst published:February 20, 2006, 16:01 ISTlast updated:February 20, 2006, 16:01 IST
